July 19th Picnic at Willow Creek Orchard
Farmer Drew Smith put up a tent for the Jug band while shoppers picked out some fresh corn and melons grown in local farm fields. Then we sat down at the picnic tables with some ice cold apple slush and watched the sprightly renditions of folk, zydeko and rock coming from at least 9 different instruments played by this 4 piece band. In addition to fiddle, triangle, accordion and wash-tub-base shown in the movie, the men brought out a harmonica, banjo, cajon wash board and fiddle to accompany other tunes. "Shakable vegatables" were passed out to kids 2 to 65 to add wide spread sonics to the beat. The accordionist is seen encouraging one 4-year-old to play along with the band's extra wash board.
I usually play medieval instruments but this group sorely tempted me to modernize a bit.
With the warm sun, the farm fields, the breeze and old fashion music - time just seemed to stand still.
